(Leagues Map)For most of the season so far, the knock on Roman Catholic has been that they play in the AAA Blue division and so it is hard to gauge how they stack up against the leading teams in the stronger Red division. Last night (Jan 27) they proved they are more than capable of challenging the big boys by shocking No. 1 ranked Holy Ghost Prep, 5-1 at the Flyers Skatezone Northeast.
The Cahillites (9-2-1 overall, 7-0 in PCL Red) got off to a confidence-boosting start by scoring twice in the first minute of the game. They capitalized off the opening face-off on an odd-man rush, when senior Dave Hayes found fellow senior Joe Urban alone for a one-timer. The Cahillites struck again seconds later on an eerily similar play. Hayes carried the puck in again on an odd-man rush and found senior Tim Racek in front. Racek beat 'Ghost goalie Steve Berardi.
The stunned Firebirds hunkered down and battled back. Late in the first they cut the deficit in half. Senior defenseman Paul Burns made a nice outlet pass to sophomore Patrick Quarry, who fed fellow sophomore Matt McEntee. He split the Roman defense and beat goalie Greg Procopio.
Roman restored a two-goal lead early in the second period. After a scrum in front, Urban found a loose puck that found the back of the net. Junior Matt D'Andrea and sophomore Mike Pagliarella picked up the assists. Building off their third goal, the Cahillites exploited a power play midway through the second. Junior Chris Baldo picked up a rebound in front from a point shot, putting his team in the driver's seat. 'Ghost continued to battle without success throughout the remainder of the period, which ended at 4-1.
The third period was much like the first two. Roman battled hard and capitalized on their chances. After a broken play in the Firebirds' zone, the puck found its way to Urban's stick. He once again beat Berardi with a wrist shot in the slot, putting his squad up for good.
The Firebirds have been ranked number one for the last several weeks, so a loss to Roman Catholic is sure to shake up the rankings and encourage their competitors in the AAA Red division.
Roman will host Monsignor Bonner Monday (Feb 1) at the Flyers Skatezone Northeast, while 'Ghost will try to rebound the same night at the same rink against Father Judge.
