When Springfield's Billy McGugan scored off a pass from Conor Doyle to give the Springfield Cougars a 1-0 lead over the Radnor Raiders less than two minutes into last Friday's game (Jan 29) at the IceWorks in Aston, many in the stands may have thought the hometeam Cougars were on their way to yet another win. But the Raiders had other plans for the evening.
Soon after McGugan's goal, Radnor's Nick Lombardi skated past two Springfield players in the offensive zone, but looked as if he had no angle to shoot. He put a perfect shot above the right shoulder of goalie Dan Straube to tie the game at 1-1.
Then, Radnor junior Teddy Smith, currently the InterCounty Central's No. 2 scorer with 26 points, went to work. He struck twice within 37 seconds, once unassisted and the second time with help from Ryan Devine (2 assists in the game) and Billy Curtis (1 goal, 1 assist). Radnor took its 3-1 lead into the second period, putting undefeated Springfield in the unaccustomed position of needing to catch up.
The second period started out slowly but things picked up four minutes in, when Radnor senior Sam Mannix scored unassisted. This was the first time all season that Springfield goalie Staube had given up more than three goals.
Springfield's first line answered quickly as team scoring leader Eric Brawley (26 points) scored from Bob Dolan and Ryan Murray to keep the Cougars in a 4-2 game going into the third.
The third period, however, belonged to Radnor. At 8 minutes Mannix sent a beautiful saucer pass across two Springfield defenders to put Scott Ball on a breakaway. Ball's aim was true and broke the game open with Radnor's fifth goal.
A half-minute later Springfield's Doyle came out for kicking and game misconduct, giving Radnor a long power play. The Raiders converted for two more scores. Senior Billy Curtis scored off an assist from Smith and Lombardi. Sophomore Conor McNally closed out the night on another great pass from Mannix (1 goal, 2 assists). Smith also finished the night with three points, while sophomore goalie Lewis Brotman had a strong 21-save performance in net for Radnor.
At 10-1-2, Springfield (No. 4 in the Class 'A' Top 10) retains its hold on first place in the ICSHL Central, with its next division game Friday against Penncrest. With the victory Radnor (8-5-1) moved into a tie for third place with Ridley, and now has a shot at displacing second-place Conestoga in a match also on Friday (Feb 5).
